Accessibility
WhatsApp voice notes,
accessible to
everyone
.
Deaf, hard of hearing, older, listening fatigue or tinnitus: turn any WhatsApp voice note into clear, readable text, in seconds. No app, nothing to change about your habits.
A WhatsApp blind spot
Voice messages have become unavoidable. For well over a billion people, they are also a barrier.
people worldwide live with some degree of hearing loss 1
people over 60 live with disabling hearing loss
many don't dare admit they didn't catch it
The usual fix, asking the sender to type it out, is a hassle and rarely sticks. Abrège takes a simpler route: you turn the voice note into text yourself.
1 Source: WHO, World Report on Hearing . Over 1.5 billion people live with some degree of hearing loss worldwide, a figure the WHO projects could reach 2.5 billion by 2050.
Who is it for, in practice?
Deaf and hard-of-hearing people
Get your voice notes like everyone else, and turn them into text without having to ask the people around you to change their habits.
Learn moreRelatives of hard-of-hearing people
Keep sending voice notes, but add a text summary so your loved one misses nothing. Accessibility becomes invisible.
Learn moreOlder people (age-related hearing loss)
Read voice notes at your own pace, in large type, without turning up the volume or asking people to repeat. Stay in the family conversation.
Learn moreTinnitus and listening fatigue
Rest your ears. Read your voice notes instead of listening when audio becomes painful or a strain.
Learn moreHow it works
Three seconds, zero effort.
Forward the voice note
To Abrège, on WhatsApp. Yours or a friend's.
It listens for you
Six seconds, then the audio is deleted.
You read what matters
The key points, the thing to do. Nothing else.
Amnesiac by design.
We keep nothing.
The moment your summary goes out, the audio file is destroyed from our servers. Unrecoverable, no copy kept. We don't want your data, just to save you time.
One thing to be clear about: to be transcribed, the audio passes through OpenAI's API (Whisper). That's the only step where it leaves us. See the details .
Deleted immediately
The audio is erased right after the summary is sent.
Never in your groups
Abrège only sees the voice notes you forward it. Never your other chats.
Encrypted in transit
Everything travels over TLS 1.3, impossible to intercept on the way.
Frequently asked questions
- Do I need to install an app?
- No. Abrège works directly in WhatsApp. You forward a voice note to the Abrège contact, you get the text. No app to install, no permissions to grant.
- Is it suitable for someone not comfortable with technology?
- Yes. The action is the same as forwarding a normal message on WhatsApp. And for people who really can't get on with technology, a relative can prepare the text summary and send it to them directly.
- Can the text be enlarged?
- Yes. The summary arrives like a normal WhatsApp message, so it benefits from all the phone's accessibility settings: enlarged font, high contrast, screen reader.
- Is the transcription reliable for important information?
- On clear speech, accuracy is excellent. For critical information like a medical appointment or an address, it's still wise to have the detail confirmed in writing, as with any automatic transcription.
- Is there a reduced price for people with disabilities?
- Yes, get in touch with us directly. Accessibility is one of the situations where we happily adapt the access terms.
- Do my conversations stay private?
- Yes, and we'd rather write it plainly than let you think nothing ever leaves. Transcription goes through OpenAI's API (United States), which states it doesn't train its models on data sent via its API: that's the only step where the audio is handled outside our servers. The file is then deleted immediately, with no copy kept, and our infrastructure is hosted in Europe.
Useful resources on hearing accessibility
A few leading organisations in France to get informed and find support:
- → Fédération Nationale des Sourds de France (FNSF) : advocacy and information for the deaf community.
- → Bucodes SurdiFrance : a union of associations for people who have become deaf or hard of hearing.
- → France Acouphènes : support for people affected by tinnitus and hyperacusis.
