Summarising a WhatsApp voice note, in practice
You've just received a five-minute voice note and you have neither the time nor the wish to listen to it in full. Summarising a WhatsApp voice note is exactly that: getting the useful information without sitting through the five minutes. Three methods exist today, they don't give the same result and they don't work on every phone. This page compares them honestly, then explains how to do it with Abrège.
Summary or transcription: which do you need?
The two words are often confused, yet they don't do the same job. A transcription gives you the text word for word: a five-minute voice note produces around 800 words, roughly four minutes of reading. You haven't gained much, you've just changed the format. A summary pulls out the essentials and the actions to remember: two or three sentences, about fifteen seconds of reading.
Choose the summary if you want to know quickly what's being asked of you, if the voice note is long, or if you're in a meeting, on the move, in the middle of something else. The most important thing to remember: WhatsApp's native feature is free and very well made, but it transcribes, it doesn't summarise, and it doesn't handle French on Android. If you're on iPhone with short voice notes, it's plenty. If you're on Android, or your voice notes run past two or three minutes, that's where Abrège becomes useful.

It's the same move as forwarding a message to a friend. Open the conversation with the voice note, long-press it, choose "Forward", then pick the Abrège contact. A few seconds later, the summary arrives in your conversation with Abrège.

A voice note too long? What actually happens
Abrège handles voice notes up to about 25 minutes. Beyond that, it's WhatsApp itself that limits the transfer, and the fix is to split the audio into two sends. In practice, very few voice notes reach this limit.
Good news: the longer the voice note, the more useful the summary. On thirty seconds, listening is as fast as reading. On six minutes of digressions that end with a single question, the summary changes everything. That's exactly where the difference shows.
One honest limit, though: if the voice note was recorded somewhere very noisy, or several people talk at once, the transcription loses precision and so does the summary. For critical information, it's better to have it confirmed in writing.
Privacy: where your audio goes
The voice note you forward is transcribed via OpenAI's API (Whisper), then the audio file is deleted from our servers as soon as the summary is sent to you, with no copy kept. That's the only step where the audio is handled outside our servers, and we'd rather write it plainly than let you think nothing ever leaves.
Our servers are hosted in Europe, exchanges are encrypted in transit (TLS 1.3), and Abrège never joins groups: it only sees the messages you explicitly forward it.
