Does WhatsApp Web transcribe voice notes? The honest answer
If you're looking for transcription on WhatsApp Web, you've probably already dug through the settings without finding anything. That's normal. At the office, listening to a voice note is rarely possible (open plan, meeting, headphones already in use) and yet that's exactly where the messages to deal with quickly land. Here's what really exists on a computer, and what doesn't.
No, WhatsApp Web does not transcribe voice messages, and neither does the WhatsApp Desktop app. WhatsApp's built-in transcription is a mobile-only feature: it exists on iPhone (around twenty languages, including French) and in a much more limited way on Android (English, Portuguese, Spanish and Russian only). In both cases it relies on the phone's speech-recognition engine, and the result never makes it back to your computer.
In practice: even if you've turned on transcription on your iPhone, no text will appear under voice notes in WhatsApp Web. No hidden setting, no official extension and no beta version changes that today. To read a voice note on PC or Mac, you have to go through a third-party service.

A word of caution on browser extensions: to work, they require access to all of WhatsApp Web's content, so to every one of your conversations. That's an enormous amount of permission to transcribe a message. Abrège only sees the voice notes you explicitly forward it.
