On Android, WhatsApp's native transcription doesn't handle French
Let's say it straight away, because it's decisive: WhatsApp does offer built-in transcription, but on Android it only supports English, Portuguese, Spanish and Russian. French isn't available (it is on iPhone, not on Android). Here's how to check, and what to do instead.
- 1 Update WhatsApp from the Play Store.
- 2 Open WhatsApp, then Settings > Chats > Voice message transcripts.
- 3 Look at the list of languages offered: if French isn't there, that's normal, it isn't supported on Android.
- 4 For a voice note in French, you therefore need another solution.
The limits, even when it works

On Android, transcribing isn't enough: you need to summarise
WhatsApp did add built-in transcription, but on Android it only handles English, Portuguese, Spanish and Russian: if you get voice notes in French, it's no help at all. And even in a supported language, it settles for word-for-word text, with no summary. That left third-party apps, often paid, that ask for invasive permissions or require uploading the file to an external cloud.

- Does it use a lot of battery or data?

It has no access to your other conversations, your groups, or your address book. WhatsApp itself guarantees this: a third-party app cannot read chats it hasn't been invited to. When you forward a voice note, only that one file reaches Abrège, nothing else. And once the summary is sent back, the audio file is immediately deleted from our servers, with no copy kept. To be transparent: to be transcribed, that audio passes through OpenAI's API (Whisper), the only step where it is handled outside our servers. The rest of your messages stays strictly between you and the people you talk to. In short: Abrège can only read what you explicitly choose to show it, and nothing more.
