When audio isn't an option
There are plenty of situations where playing sound or using earphones is awkward, even impossible: a meeting, a client presentation, lunch, a family meal, quiet public transport, a waiting room, a library, the start of a class.
Yet it's often in those moments that the important voice notes land: a relative saying they're on their way, a colleague needing an urgent detail, a delivery driver looking for your address.
Being discreet means two things at once: that no one around you hears, and that the sender doesn't see you listened. The second is the one people forget, and it's often the most awkward: the moment you hit play, the mic turns blue on their side, and a reply is expected within the minute.

The blue mic, the one you can't turn off
Lots of people turn off read receipts in the privacy settings thinking they're covered. For text messages, that works. For voice notes, it doesn't: WhatsApp treats playing a voice note as a separate confirmation that ignores this setting. You can have read receipts off for years, the mic will still turn blue the moment you hit play.
It's the one confirmation WhatsApp doesn't let you disable. In practice, the methods that work all come down to never playing the original message: listening from a forwarded copy, or reading a transcript of it. Forwarding a voice note to Abrège is the first kind, so discretion comes with it, no extra step.
Reading rather than listening: the other situations
The meeting is the most obvious case, but it's not the only one. As soon as audio becomes impossible or painful, reading the message solves it: on a silent train, in a waiting room, next to someone sleeping, when the earphones' battery is dead, or simply when you don't fancy sitting through five minutes of chatter.
There are several ways to read a voice note without playing it, and they're not equal: your phone's native transcription, a third-party tool, or a summary. The choice depends mostly on the length of the message and your system, Android or iPhone.

- Is it really more discreet than earphones?
- Much more. Earphones are visible, need taking out and plugging in, and cut off your surrounding audio. Reading text on your screen is as discreet as reading a text message.
- Can I turn off Abrège's sound notifications?
- Yes, you can mute the Abrège conversation in WhatsApp like any contact. You get the transcription with no audio notification at all.
- Does the sender see that I listened to their voice note?
- Not if you never play it. The blue mic appears when you hit play on the original message, and that signal can't be turned off in the settings, unlike text read receipts. By forwarding the voice note to Abrège, you read the content without ever playing the original: nothing changes on their side.
- Isn't turning off read receipts enough?
- No, and it's the most common misunderstanding. That setting applies to text messages, not voice notes: WhatsApp sends a separate read confirmation the moment a voice note is played, whatever your settings. The only way not to trigger it is not to play the original message.

It has no access to your other conversations, your groups, or your address book. WhatsApp itself guarantees this: a third-party app cannot read chats it hasn't been invited to. When you forward a voice note, only that one file reaches Abrège, nothing else. And once the summary is sent back, the audio file is immediately deleted from our servers, with no copy kept. To be transparent: to be transcribed, that audio passes through OpenAI's API (Whisper), the only step where it is handled outside our servers. The rest of your messages stays strictly between you and the people you talk to. In short: Abrège can only read what you explicitly choose to show it, and nothing more.
