WhatsApp transcript unavailable? Every cause and how to fix it

A WhatsApp voice note with a transcript unavailable message under it

Abrège is a WhatsApp assistant: forward it a voice note and you get the summary in writing within 10 seconds. Nothing to install, no sign-up. Try it, it’s free

The short answer: when WhatsApp says a voice note transcript is unavailable, the cause is almost always one of three things: the voice note is in a language your transcript setting does not support, the language pack has not finished downloading, or the feature is not switched on for your account yet. Each has a fix, listed below. And if the transcript does appear but is full of holes, that is not a setting problem: it is the limit of on-device transcription.

WhatsApp's built-in voice note transcripts are handy when they work. When they do not, the app gives you very little to go on: an option that stays greyed out, a "transcript unavailable" line under the message, or a note that it is not available in your language. Here is how to work out which case you are in.

First, check which symptom you have

The fixes are different depending on what you see. Find your line in the table, then jump to the matching section.

Cause 1: the feature is off or not yet on your account

Voice message transcripts are off by default. Go to Settings > Chats > Voice message transcripts, switch it on and choose your transcript language. After that, long-press any voice note and tap Transcribe.

If you cannot find that line in Settings at all, the feature has not reached your account or your device. WhatsApp rolls features out in waves, and older system versions are left out.

The fix:

  1. Update WhatsApp from the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Update your phone's operating system if an update is waiting.
  3. Restart the phone, then check Settings > Chats again.

If the menu still is not there after that, there is nothing else to toggle. You either wait, or use a method that does not depend on your phone (see the last section).

Cause 2: "Transcript not available in your language"

This is the most common message, and the most confusing, because the feature is clearly there and simply refuses to work.

WhatsApp transcribes on your phone, not on its servers. That is good for privacy, but it means the list of languages depends on what your device can process:

  • On Android, the stable app supports English, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Hindi and Arabic.
  • On iPhone, WhatsApp relies on Apple's speech recognition, so the list is longer (it includes French, German, Italian and many others).
  • In the Android beta, version 2.26.37.5 (September 2026) adds French, German, Italian and Japanese. That is a test build: the stable version does not have them yet, and no date has been announced.

The fix: if your language is not on your phone's list, no setting will change it. You can join the WhatsApp beta on Android if your language is in the test, or use a transcription route that runs on a server. Our page on how to transcribe a WhatsApp voice note on Android goes through the options.

Cause 3: the language pack has not finished downloading

When you switch transcripts on, WhatsApp downloads a language pack to the phone. Until it is complete, the option stays greyed out or the transcript fails silently.

The fix:

  1. Connect to Wi-Fi: the pack is a few tens of megabytes, and some phones hold large downloads until Wi-Fi is available.
  2. Check your free storage. If the phone is nearly full, the download stalls.
  3. Turn off battery saver and data saver for a few minutes. On many Android handsets, Samsung and Xiaomi included, these modes pause background downloads.
  4. Leave WhatsApp open for a minute, then try again.

If it still stays greyed out, switch transcripts off, restart the phone, and switch them back on. That forces a fresh download.

Cause 4: the voice note is in another language

WhatsApp reads every voice note in the one language you selected. If your setting is English and a friend sends a voice note in Spanish, WhatsApp does not detect the switch. You either get "transcript unavailable" or a line of English words that sound vaguely like the Spanish.

This catches out anyone in a bilingual family, a multilingual team, or a country where people switch languages mid-sentence, which is most of the people who send voice notes in India, Nigeria or South Africa.

The fix: change the transcript language in Settings > Chats > Voice message transcripts before transcribing that voice note, then change it back. It works, but it is tedious, and mixed-language voice notes will still come out badly. And if the real problem is that you do not speak the language of the voice note, a transcript will not help: you need to translate the WhatsApp voice message, or at least get a summary of it in your own language.

Cause 5: the voice note itself is the problem

Sometimes everything is set up correctly and one particular voice note refuses to transcribe. Usual reasons:

  • It is very short, a second or two, or mostly silence.
  • There is too much background noise: a car, wind, music, a crowded room.
  • It is not really speech: a song, a baby laughing, someone humming.
  • It has not fully downloaded. Tap play once (or let it download) and try again.

There is no fix beyond asking the sender, or listening to it. This one is not a bug.

The problem nobody fixes: a transcript with holes

Now the case that does not appear in any error message. Transcription is switched on, the language is supported, and you get text. But it is wrong in the places that matter.

On-device transcription is light by design. It has to run on a phone, offline, in a few seconds. It copes well with short, clear speech. It stumbles on exactly the details you wanted from the voice note:

  • Names: a surname, a street, a company, a brand come out as a similar-sounding common word.
  • Numbers: a price, a time, a phone number, a reference get dropped or mangled.
  • Addresses: the one line you needed to copy is the one that comes out garbled.
  • Accents and fast speech: whole sentences can go missing.

To see what that looks like in practice, we put the same voice note through WhatsApp's transcript and through Abrège, side by side.

And even when the transcript is perfect, it does not summarise anything. A four-minute voice note becomes six hundred words to read, which takes about as long as listening. You have changed the format, not saved any time.

When the native transcript is not enough

This is where a different kind of tool makes sense. Abrège 🍿 is a WhatsApp contact. You forward it the voice note, the same way you would forward it to a friend, and in about 10 to 30 seconds it replies in the same chat with:

  • A summary of the voice note: the key points, dates, amounts, names, and the questions you were asked.
  • The full transcript, sent after the summary (as a text file when the voice note is long), which you can switch off in settings if you only want the summary.

Because the transcription runs on a server rather than on your phone, none of the causes above apply: no language pack, no phone list, no greyed-out option. It works the same on Android, iPhone and WhatsApp Web. The voice note's language is detected automatically, and you can also ask for the summary in English, French, Arabic, Spanish or Portuguese whatever language was spoken. The full transcript stays in the original language.

To be straight about privacy: unlike the native feature, this means the audio leaves your phone. It is sent to OpenAI for transcription and summary, then deleted after processing. The person who sent the voice note is not notified that you forwarded it.

The free plan gives you 5 summaries a month, no card needed. It is the quickest way to compare the two on a voice note that the native transcript got wrong.

Quick fix checklist

  1. Settings > Chats > Voice message transcripts: switched on, language chosen.
  2. WhatsApp and the phone's system both up to date.
  3. Your language is on your phone's supported list.
  4. Wi-Fi on, storage free, battery saver off, and the language pack downloaded.
  5. The voice note is in the language you selected.
  6. The voice note has real, audible speech in it.

If all six are fine and the transcript still misses what you need, the fix is not in your settings. See our honest look at the limits of WhatsApp's automatic transcription, or the step-by-step guide to enable WhatsApp transcription on each system.

Frequently asked questions

Why does WhatsApp say the transcript is unavailable?

Most of the time, because the voice note is in a language your transcript setting does not cover, or because the language pack has not finished downloading. Less often, the audio is too short, too noisy, or your WhatsApp version is out of date.

Why is the transcript not available in my language?

WhatsApp transcribes on your phone, with a fixed list of languages. On Android the stable app covers English, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Hindi and Arabic. On iPhone it relies on Apple's speech recognition, which covers more. French, German, Italian and Japanese are being tested in the Android beta but are not in the stable version yet.

Can WhatsApp transcribe a voice note in a different language from my setting?

No. You pick one transcript language, and every voice note is read as if it were in that language. A voice note in another language either fails or comes out as nonsense. You have to switch the setting each time, which nobody does.

Is there a way to transcribe a WhatsApp voice note that does not depend on my phone?

Yes: forward it to a service that transcribes on a server rather than on the device. Abrège, for example, is a WhatsApp contact: you forward the voice note, and it replies in the same chat with a summary and the full transcript, whatever your phone or the language of the voice note.
