WhatsApp voice message microphone colours: grey, green and blue explained

The short answer: a blue microphone next to a WhatsApp voice note means it has been played. On voice notes you sent, the mic is grey until the recipient plays it, then turns blue. On voice notes you received, the mic is green until you play it, then turns blue. And turning off read receipts does not change this: the play receipt for voice notes cannot be switched off.
It's one of the most searched little details of WhatsApp, because the colour answers the question everyone has after sending a voice note: have they listened to it yet? Here is what each colour means, based on WhatsApp's own Help Center (read in September 2026).
The three microphone colours at a glance
| Colour | Where you see it | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Grey | On a voice note you sent | Not played by all recipients yet (in a group, some may have played it) |
| Green | On a voice note you received | You have not played it yet |
| Blue | On either | Played: by the recipient (all recipients in a group), or by you |
The colour changes only once: from grey or green to blue. After that it stays blue, however many times the voice note is replayed.
Grey microphone: sent, not played (yet)
When you send a voice note, it shows a grey mic. That means it has not been played by everyone you sent it to. It says nothing about whether it was delivered or seen: those are shown by the ticks next to it, as with any message.
In a one-to-one chat, grey simply means the other person has not played it. In a group, the mic stays grey until every member has played it. WhatsApp's wording is that it "might have been played by some", which is why a grey mic in a group is not proof that nobody listened. To see who has played it, long-press the voice note and open Info: the list shows who it was delivered to, who read it and who played it.
Green microphone: received, not played
On your side, a voice note you have received and not yet played shows a green mic. It's WhatsApp's way of flagging which voice notes are still waiting for you. It turns blue the moment you press play.
Useful to know if you are working through a backlog: the green ones are those you have not heard. If you have a lot of them, our piece on how many unlistened WhatsApp voice notes you really have has a practical way to clear them.
Blue microphone: played
Blue means played, on both sides:
- On a voice note you sent: the recipient has played it (in a group, all of them have).
- On a voice note you received: you have played it.
WhatsApp does not count plays. A blue mic after one listen looks exactly like a blue mic after ten. There is no play counter and no list of replays.

Try it, it’s freeDelivered, seen, played: three different states
The mic and the ticks track different things, which is where most of the confusion comes from.
| What the sender sees | What it means |
|---|---|
| One grey tick | Sent, not delivered to the phone yet |
| Two grey ticks, grey mic | Delivered, chat not opened |
| Two blue ticks, grey mic | Chat opened (seen), voice note not played |
| Two blue ticks, blue mic | Seen and played |
So "two blue ticks and a grey mic" is a real, specific state: the person opened the conversation but hasn't played your voice note. WhatsApp's Help Center describes it exactly that way: seen, but not played.
What read receipts change, and what they don't
This is the most repeated mistake online. Turning off read receipts (Settings > Privacy > Read receipts) hides the blue ticks in one-to-one chats. It does not hide the blue microphone.
WhatsApp is explicit on this: turning off read receipts does not disable read receipts in group chats or play receipts for voice messages, and there is no way to turn those off. If you play someone's voice note, their mic turns blue, whatever your settings.
What that means in practice:
- With read receipts off, the sender can still see you played their voice note, but may not see that you opened the chat.
- With read receipts off, you can still see when your voice notes are played, even though you no longer see other people's blue ticks.
Why a voice note can stay grey even after a reply
A few reasons a mic stays grey when you'd expect blue:
- They replied without playing it. They may have read a transcript, a summary, or guessed from context. Reading a transcript is not playing the audio.
- It's a group, and not every member has played it yet.
- A display bug. In September 2026 WhatsApp's own Help Center carried a notice about an issue with the microphone colour not updating once a voice message has been played. If the colour looks wrong, it may not be the other person.
How to know what's in a voice note without it turning blue
Since the mic tracks playing, the only reliable way to take in a voice note without the sender's mic turning blue is to not play it. Two options:
- WhatsApp's own transcript: long-press the voice note and tap Transcribe (after turning it on in Settings > Chats > Voice message transcripts). WhatsApp says the sender cannot see transcripts. Language support depends on your phone.
- Forward it to Abrège 🍿, a WhatsApp contact that replies in the same chat with a summary and the full transcript in about 10 to 30 seconds. Forwarding is not playing, and the original sender is not notified.
In both cases, opening the chat can still send blue ticks if your read receipts are on. For every method, with what each one hides and doesn't, see our guide to checking a WhatsApp voice note without being seen. Frequently asked questions
What does the blue microphone mean on WhatsApp?
It means the voice note has been played. On a voice note you sent, a blue mic means the recipient played it (in a group, that every recipient did). On a voice note you received, it means you have already played it yourself.
Why is my WhatsApp voice message microphone green?
A green microphone appears on voice notes you have received and not played yet. It turns blue once you play them. The sender sees their own copy with a grey mic until then.
Does the mic turn blue if read receipts are off?
Yes. WhatsApp's Help Center says turning off read receipts does not disable play receipts for voice messages, and there is no setting to turn them off. If you play a voice note, the sender's mic turns blue.
Why is my voice note still grey after they replied?
Either they replied without playing it (from a preview, a transcript or a summary), or in a group not everyone has played it yet. WhatsApp has also flagged a known issue where the mic colour does not always update after a voice note is played.
