Can you forward a WhatsApp voice note without the sender knowing?

A WhatsApp voice note being forwarded from a chat with the Forward menu open

Abrège is a WhatsApp assistant: forward it a voice note and you get the summary in writing within 10 seconds. Nothing to install, no sign-up. Try it, it’s free

The short answer: yes. Forwarding a WhatsApp voice note does not notify the person who sent it, and it does not mark it as played, so their microphone stays grey. The one thing they might see is the blue double tick, because you have to open the chat to forward it and that sends a read receipt if you both have read receipts on.

Forwarding is one of the most useful things you can do with a voice note: send it to yourself to listen later, pass it to a colleague who needs it, or send it somewhere that turns it into text. Here is exactly what the original sender can and can't see when you do, based on WhatsApp's Help Center (read in September 2026).

What the original sender can see

Action Does the sender see it?
You forward their voice note No notification
The "Forwarded" label No: only you and the new recipient see it
You forward without playing Mic stays grey (not played)
You play the original in their chat Yes: their mic turns blue
You open the chat to forward it Blue double tick, if read receipts are on

WhatsApp's documentation has no mention of any alert to the original sender when a message is forwarded, and the Forwarded label appears on the copy, which the original sender never sees. "Played", in WhatsApp's own definition, means the recipient has played the voice message. Forwarding is not playing.

The blue tick catch

The part most guides skip: you cannot forward a message from outside the chat. You open the conversation, long-press the voice note and tap Forward. Opening the conversation is what sends the blue double tick, if read receipts are on for both of you.

So after a forward, the sender may see "two blue ticks, grey mic". That means: seen, not played. It's a normal state in WhatsApp, and it doesn't reveal that you forwarded anything.

If you want to avoid the ticks in a one-to-one chat, turn off Settings > Privacy > Read receipts before opening it. Two things to know: this is reciprocal (you stop seeing other people's blue ticks too), and it doesn't apply in groups. It also doesn't hide the blue mic if you play the voice note: WhatsApp's play receipts for voice messages can't be turned off. What each colour means is explained in our guide to the blue microphone on WhatsApp.

How to forward a WhatsApp voice note

The steps are the same on iPhone, Android and WhatsApp Web:

  1. Open the chat and long-press the voice note (on Web, hover and open the small menu).
  2. Tap Forward (the arrow icon).
  3. Pick one or several chats, then tap Send.

Do not tap play along the way. As long as you don't play the original, it stays unplayed on the sender's side.

Forward to yourself: listen without it showing as played

WhatsApp has a chat with yourself, at the top of the list when you forward, marked You (Message Yourself). Forward the voice note there and play the copy in your own chat. You hear the whole thing, and the original is never played, so the sender's mic stays grey.

It works well for one voice note. For many, it clutters your personal chat, and you still have to listen: sound on, earphones in, four minutes of your time.

Forward to Abrège: read it instead of listening

If what you want is to know what's in the voice note, rather than to hear it, forward it to a contact that turns it into text.

Abrège 🍿 is a WhatsApp contact built for exactly that. You forward it the voice note like you would to a friend, and in about 10 to 30 seconds it replies in the same chat with:

  • A summary: the key points, plus any dates, amounts, names and questions quoted so you don't miss them.
  • The full transcript after it (as a text file when the voice note is long). You can turn it off in settings if you only want the summary.

The original sender gets no notification, and since you never played their voice note, their mic stays grey. It works the same with a group voice note: the group sees nothing. It also works from a WhatsApp Business account, if the voice note is from a customer: here is how WhatsApp Business voice note transcription works day to day.

To be clear about where the audio goes: it is sent to OpenAI for transcription and summary, then deleted after processing. The text stays in your WhatsApp chat with Abrège, where you can search it later. The free plan covers 5 summaries a month, no card needed.

Forward to someone else

Forwarding to another person works the same way, and the original sender isn't notified. Two things worth keeping in mind:

  • The new recipient sees a Forwarded label on it, so they know it didn't come from you originally.
  • A voice note is someone's own voice, often said in a more casual way than a written message. Before passing it on, it's worth asking whether the sender would be comfortable with that. Often a summary in your own words, or a short text of the part that matters, does the job better.

Common questions about what forwarding reveals

Does the sender see who I forwarded it to? No. There's nothing in WhatsApp that shows the original sender where their message went.

Does forwarding show in their message info? Their message info shows whether it was delivered, read and played. Forwarding isn't one of those states.

What about "Forwarded many times"? WhatsApp adds a double-arrow label when a message has been forwarded through a chain of several people. That label is shown on the copies, to whoever receives them, not to the person who recorded it.

Frequently asked questions

Does WhatsApp notify someone when you forward their voice note?

No. WhatsApp's Help Center documents no notification to the original sender when a message is forwarded. The Forwarded label is shown to you and to the person you forward it to, not to the person who first sent it.

Does forwarding a voice note mark it as played?

No. WhatsApp counts a voice note as played when the recipient plays it, and forwarding is not playing. As long as you do not press play in the original chat, the mic stays grey on the sender's side.

Will the sender see blue ticks if I forward their voice note?

Possibly. To forward a voice note you have to open the chat, and opening the chat sends the blue double tick if both of you have read receipts on. Turn read receipts off first if you want to avoid that in a one-to-one chat.

Can I forward a voice note to myself on WhatsApp?

Yes. Long-press the voice note, tap Forward and pick the chat at the top of your list marked You (Message Yourself). The copy lands in your own chat, where you can play it without touching the original.
