How to speed up WhatsApp voice notes (1.5x, 2x) and when to skip them

Abrège is a WhatsApp assistant: forward it a voice note and you get the summary in writing within 10 seconds. Nothing to install, no sign-up. Try it, it’s free

The short answer: start playing the voice note, then tap the 1x button next to it. It switches to 1.5x, then 2x, then back to 1x. The button is in the same place on iPhone, Android and WhatsApp Web. At 2x, a four-minute voice note takes two minutes. If that is still too long, you can skip listening and read a summary instead.

Some voice notes are a quick "on my way". Others are five minutes of someone thinking out loud while they walk to the shops. WhatsApp's playback speed button was built for the second kind. Here is how to use it, and where it runs out.

How to change WhatsApp voice message playback speed

The speed control is not in Settings. It only appears while a voice note is playing, which is why so many people never find it.

On iPhone

  1. Open the chat and tap play on the voice note.
  2. A small 1x button appears next to the voice note.
  3. Tap it once for 1.5x, twice for 2x. A third tap goes back to 1x.

On Android

It works the same way: tap play, and the 1x button appears beside the voice note. Tap it to cycle through 1.5x and 2x.

On WhatsApp Web and Desktop

Play the voice note and click the 1x label beside it. Same three speeds.

If you do not see the button, update WhatsApp: the feature has been there for years, but very old versions do not have it.

How much time 1.5x and 2x really save

The maths is simple, and it is worth doing once to see what you gain.

Voice note length At 1.5x At 2x
1 minute 40 seconds 30 seconds
3 minutes 2 minutes 1 minute 30
5 minutes 3 minutes 20 2 minutes 30
10 minutes 6 minutes 40 5 minutes

At 2x you halve the time. That is a real gain on a one-off voice note. On a busy day with a dozen long ones from family groups, work and friends, you are still spending half an hour with your phone against your ear.

What the speed button cannot do

Playback speed is a good tool with a narrow job. It makes listening shorter. It does not change the fact that you are listening.

Nothing faster than 2x. There is no 3x and no custom speed. Past 2x, most voices become hard to follow anyway.

No slowing down. There is no 0.5x or 0.75x. If the sender talks fast, has a strong accent, or you have some hearing loss, WhatsApp gives you no way to slow the audio.

You still need sound. On the train, in a meeting, at dinner, with a sleeping partner next to you: faster audio is still audio. You need earphones or a quiet corner.

You still have to pay attention the whole way through. At 2x you cannot drift for a second, or you miss the one line that mattered. Most people end up replaying a section, which eats into the time saved.

You cannot skim it. With text, your eyes jump to the part that matters. With audio, even at double speed, you take it in order, from the "hi, so, anyway" at the start to the actual question at the end.

The sender still sees it was played. Playing at 2x is still playing: the microphone turns blue on their side, exactly as at normal speed. More on that in our guide to the blue microphone on WhatsApp.

You cannot search it later. A time, an address or a price said out loud is gone once the voice note scrolls up. To find it again next week you replay the whole thing.

The step after 2x: read instead of listening

Reading beats listening, even at double speed. Most people read faster than anyone talks, and above all reading lets you skip, scan and go back without effort. So the next step after speeding up is not a bigger speed: it is not listening at all.

There are two ways to get a voice note as text.

WhatsApp's own transcript

Long-press the voice note and tap Transcribe (after switching it on in Settings > Chats > Voice message transcripts). The text appears under the message, generated on your phone.

It is free and quick, but it has limits. The list of languages depends on your phone: on Android the stable app covers English, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Hindi and Arabic, and other languages such as French are only in beta for now. It tends to stumble on names, numbers and addresses. And on a five-minute voice note, it gives you five minutes of speech as text: still a long read. If the option does not work for you, our guide covers every cause of the transcript unavailable error.

A summary, then the full text if you want it

For long voice notes, what you usually want is not every word, it is the point. That is what Abrège 🍿 does. It is a WhatsApp contact: you forward it the voice note, and in about 10 to 30 seconds it replies in the same chat with:

  • A short summary: the key points, plus any dates, amounts, names and questions pulled out so you do not miss them.
  • The full transcript after it, if you want to check the exact words (switch it off in settings if you only want summaries).

A five-minute voice note becomes something you read in fifteen seconds. You decide from the summary whether the audio is worth playing at all, and if it is, you play it at 2x knowing what to listen for.

A few practical points. It works from iPhone, Android and WhatsApp Web, with nothing to install. Forwarding does not notify the sender, and since you have not played the original, the microphone does not turn blue on their side. The audio is sent to OpenAI for transcription and summary, then deleted. The free plan covers 5 summaries a month, no card needed.

Which one to use, and when

Situation Best option
Short voice note, you have earphones Just play it, at 1.5x if you like
Long voice note, you have time and sound 2x
Long voice note, no sound possible Native transcript or summary
A string of long voice notes to catch up on Summary, then play the ones that matter
Accent or fast speech you find hard to follow Transcript, not a faster speed
You need to find a detail again later Text you can search

The speed button and the summary are not rivals. Speed is for the voice notes you want to hear, like a friend's story or a relative's news. A summary is for the ones where you just need to know what to do next.

Getting ahead of the long ones

If you get a lot of long voice notes, it helps to know why they happen. Our piece on why your friends send 5-minute voice notes looks at the habit from the sender's side, and the long voice note that says nothing covers the ones where, once summarised, there turns out to be one sentence of content.

Try it on the longest voice note in your chats today: play it at 2x, then forward it for a summary, and compare which one got you to the point first.

Frequently asked questions

How do I play a WhatsApp voice note at 2x speed?

Start playing the voice note, then tap the small 1x button that appears next to it. One tap switches to 1.5x, a second tap to 2x, a third back to 1x. It works the same on iPhone, Android and WhatsApp Web or Desktop.

Can you play WhatsApp voice notes faster than 2x?

No. WhatsApp offers three speeds only: 1x, 1.5x and 2x. There is no 3x, and no custom setting. To go faster you would have to save the audio and open it in another player, which takes longer than the time it saves.

Can you slow down a WhatsApp voice message?

Not inside WhatsApp: there is no 0.5x or 0.75x option. If someone speaks too fast or with an accent you struggle with, reading a transcript is usually easier than trying to slow the audio.

Does speeding up a voice note still show the sender I listened?

Yes. Playing a voice note at any speed counts as playing it, so the microphone icon turns blue on the sender's side as usual. Only reading a transcript or summary, without playing the original, leaves it unplayed.
