Baraphrase is free and does the job properly. Only, its bot lives on Telegram: to summarise a WhatsApp voice note, you have to long-press it, share it to Telegram, pick the bot, then come back. Abrège receives the voice note inside WhatsApp and replies in the same conversation. That's the whole difference, and depending on how you use it, it's either decisive or irrelevant.
Where Baraphrase is a good choice
To be fair: Baraphrase is a good tool, and it's free. The summary is clean, voice notes up to about twenty minutes go through fine, and their data policy is clear, they state they keep nothing sensitive and never use the voice notes they receive to train models. The service is also broader than ours: it accepts voice notes from Messenger or Beeper, not just WhatsApp, and their site exists in four languages including French. If you already live in Telegram, the detour costs you nothing: you share, you get it back, done. And if price is the deciding factor, the comparison stops there, Abrège isn't free beyond five summaries a month. We won't pretend otherwise.
Where Abrège changes the game
What Baraphrase costs you isn't money, it's a manoeuvre on every voice note. Their page says it themselves: "Our voice note transcription service works on Telegram, as it offers a more open service than WhatsApp." So there's no native WhatsApp bot. In practice: long-press the voice note, share, pick Telegram, select the bot, read, come back to WhatsApp to reply. Multiplied by a day's voice notes, that back-and-forth is exactly what we set out to remove. It also assumes you have Telegram installed, which isn't a given, and that you're fine taking someone's audio out of WhatsApp, where they sent it to you. Abrège is a single move: you forward to the Abrège contact, the reply lands in the thread, you carry on. The summary is also tuned for spoken French, slang, French-speaking accents, sentences that trail off, where a general-purpose engine gives correct but flatter text.
